ZANZIBAR BEACH ADD-ON

NOMAD FLEXIBLE TOUR

7 DAYS STONE TOWN AND EAST COASTACCOMMODATION BASED TOUR

Zanzibar is not only a destination in it’s own right but also a perfect location to add on to a safari elsewhere in Southern Africa, using Johannesburg as a hub from which to travel. Flights from Johannesburg to Stone Town are on Tuesdays and Fridays. This lends itself to a seven day visit to Zanzibar, but you could increase your stay to ten days or more. It is also possible to access Zanzibar from Dar-es Salaam, taking a hydrofoil from the main port to Stone Town. You can fly to Dar-es Salaam from Lusaka and Johannesburg.

ZANZIBAR is to be found off the East Coast of Tanzania and is the ideal location for a beach holiday or honeymoon destination, although it has more to offer than just a stunning Indian Ocean setting.

The Islands are surrounded by  warm tropical waters, home to dolphin, turtles, rays and a variety of fish including yellowfin tuna. Offshore the surrounding  reefs and atolls support abundant marine species - colourful fish, octopus, star fish, sea urchins and many species of coral. Some areas are classified as marine conservation areas and, with visibility often over thirty metres, they are a perfect location to explore whilst diving or snorkelling. The beaches have a large tidal range, exposing miles of coral sands and rock pools at low tide.

STONE TOWN is situated on the south west side of the main island of Zanzibar and it provides the main airport access. The old heart of the town is a UNESCO world heritage site, a jumble of narrow streets in the Arabic style, displaying the skills of the local carpenters on carved and decorated doors and balconies. It’s history lies in trading and it’s chequered past established it as a slaving island as well as a spice island. This is a place where you can explore the history of the region as well as the shops and markets of present day Stone Town.

WILDLIFE on the islands will seem limited, especially if you have arrived in Zanzibar after being on Safari, but the Jozani Forest Reserve in the central area of the island is home to the rare Kirk’s colobus monkey, Syke’s monkey, small buck and bushpigs. Guided tours are offered in the reserve.

THE COAST to the east and the north east of the Island are a perfect location for a beach holiday. Along the coast there is a wide selection of hotels and guest houses, mostly with beach frontage. Many are set under impressive roofs thatched with coconut palms and are set in lush tropical gardens running down to palm fringed beaches.

Days 1 to 4
Arrive in Stone Town and transfer to your hotel. You will have plenty of time to explore the historic town and on the morning of day 2 there will be a personally guided tour of the areas of interest within the town and this will give you an insight into it’s history.

Stay for two nights on a B&B basis in either The Africa House Hotel, Dhow Palace Hotel, or Zanzibar Palace Hotel, depending on availability and your price range.

Days 3 to 7
Today you will transfer to your hotel on the Eastern side of the Island to enjoy a relaxing location on the beach. During your stay here you could opt for activities such as diving or snorkelling, a day trip to Jozani Forest, fishing trips or a Spice Tour. Activities are additional to the tour cost but bookings can be made for you in advance. Should you wish to explore the Island more we can also arrange for a local hire car to be available.

Stay for five nights on a Half Board basis. in either Uroa Beach Resort, Pongwe Beach Hotel or Ras Nungwi, depending on availability and your price range.

Day 8
Transfer back to Stone Town for your return flight to Johannesburg.

ZAMBIA & ZIMBABWE

NOMAD FLEXIBLE TOUR

14 DAYS GUIDED TOUR - KARIBA , MANA POOLS, LIVINGSTONE & HWANGE NATIONAL PARK

THIS TOUR IS CAMPING BASED THE FACILITIES AT MANA POOLS AND HWANGE ARE BASIC, BUT PUNCTUATED BY EXCELLENT ACCOMMODATION IN LIVINGSTONE

When Nomad African Travel was first established Zimbabwe was one of our favourite and most popular destinations. Since then the country has experienced difficult times and a massive decline in tourism. In more recent years the political situation has been more stable and the introduction of the U$ Dollar has helped to stabilise the economy and, as a result, there is now fuel available and some choice of products in the local shops. In 2009 we reintroduced Zimbabwe as an option for a small group of returning clients, the trip was a success and, although the country is suffering from many years without investment, areas such as the National Parks still offer plenty to see, with relatively few other tourists sharing the experience.

MANA POOLS means the place of four pools. These four main pools are old channels, previously part the river, whilst other smaller seasonal pools are scattered over 200 sq kms. Located on the southern bank of the Zambezi it is also a world heritage site, with spectacular scenery, vegetation and wildlife. Facilities at Mana Pools are basic, but it is the only park in Zimbabwe holding carnivores and the larger mammals in which visitors are allowed to walk unaccompanied. We hope to see wild dogs, as well as elephant, lion and buffalo, alongside a variety of herbivores and birdlife numbering 300 species.

HWANGE national park is conveniently situated, two hours drive from Livingstone. The scenery within the park is very varied, including open plain, woodland and river valley. Perhaps the most attractive area is around Sinamatella, which is situated on top of a large plateau and commands spectacular views out across the park.

The wide variety of game within the park includes elephant, giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, impala, hippo, crocodile, kudu, wild dog, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and many smaller mammals and bird species. In addition to game drives it is possible to book game walks with an armed scout, at additional cost. There are also hides and two quite large picnic areas at Mandavu and Masuma Dams, where you can sit and observe the game.

Day 1 The tour starts early morning in Lusaka, with a pick up at the airport. It is a four to five hour drive to the impressive Kariba Dam, which holds back the Zambezi river and generates hydro electric power for the two neighbouring countries. The dam wall forms the border from Zambia to Zimbabwe and after crossing into Zimbabwe there is a chance to relax on the banks of Lake Kariba, where you will stay for one night in chalet accommodation.

Days 2 to 5 This morning we drive to Mana Pools. If available we will camp at one of the bush camps - Mucheni or Ndungu, which will be exclusively for our group. Stay for four nights on a camping basis.

Days 6. 7 & 8  Start early to allow time for the long drive, via Kariba, to Livingstone. Here you will stay for three nights at Bushbuck River House, on a half board basis. Set in 105 acres of bush at Liyoyelo Farm the riverside setting attracts animals such as elephant, hippo, buffalo, waterbuck and bushbuck, along with a variety of bird species. There is also an opportunity to enjoy the town of Livingstone and the many additional activities on offer.

Day 9 to 13 In the morning we drive, via the historic Zambezi Bridge at Victoria Falls, to Hwange National Park. We stay in Hwange for five nights. The first night is at Sinamatella, the middle two at one of the bush camps (if available we will book the Masuma Dam site for our exclusive use, this has a hide overlooking the waterhole and game can be viewed through the night). The last two nights at Main Camp.

Day 14 After a brief morning game drive we will break camp and drive back to either Victoria Falls or Livingstone for your onward travel arrangements.

Days 1 to 6 Leave Johannesburg early in the morning to drive to Kruger National Park. Camps will vary depending on availability but we suggest the first  two nights at Berg-en-Dal camp. The area is scenic and hilly with granite kopjies favoured by white rhino and leopard.

Your following two nights could be spent at Satara camp in the centre of the park. En-route to Satara you will game view all the way and the area between Berg-en-Dal and Skukuza is renowned for its wild dog sightings. Satara has a flatter more open habitat, often large herds of buffalo can be seen and these provide the main attraction for lion. This area is also the most likely location for cheetah.

From Satara we suggest travelling north to Shingwedzi where you will spend one night.

For your last night in Kruger Letaba camp is recommended. The area around Shingwedzi and Letaba is more forested with Mopane trees and the main target species will be elephant and leopard. All areas have an abundance of herbivorous species and a wealth of bird life.

Stay for six nights in National Parks accommodation on a room only basis.

Day 7  starts with a game drive, as you travel towards Orpen gate and exit Kruger. The drive continues to Mountain view camp, Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre in the heart of the scenic Blyde River canyon area.

The centre is renowned for caring for injured and poisoned animals before release back into the wild. Many animals and birds receive treatment and in the afternoon it is possible to visit and view the work of staff and volunteers.

Stay for one night in en-suite chalets on a B&B basis

Day 8  After a leisurely breakfast drive through the scenic landscape eastwards to Bela Bela, where you will stay for one night on a B&B basis.

Days 9 to 11 After breakfast drive to Tlopi Tented camp in Marakele National Park. This recently created National park now has 'The big five' (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant). The landscape of the Waterberg Mountains makes this a very scenic area and one of the big attractions is a Cape Vulture colony.

Morning and afternoon game drives will be undertaken and you will stay for three nights in en-suite tents on a self-catering basis. Each tent has en-suite facilities, a self catering kitchen with refrigerator, cooker and outside braai stand.

Days 12 to 14  After breakfast drive to Madikwe Game Reserve, where we will stay at Mosetlha Bush camp. This rustic camp has wooden chalets, no electricity and hot water for the bucket showers heated by a donkey boiler. Toilets are close by, but not en-suite.The camp has no fencing and the sounds of the bush are close at hand.

Morning and afternoon game drives will be undertaken with a game ranger from the lodge in an open game viewer. The game in the reserve includes lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, but one of the main attractions is the presence of a healthy pack of wild dogs and occasional sightings of the rare and elusive brown hyena.

Stay for three nights on a full board basis including game drives.

Days 15 After breakfast there is a short drive to Gaborone, crossing the border into Botswana. Flights are available back to Johannesburg with Air Botswana.
